REFRACTORIES IN HEAT UNITS
WAYS OF IMPROVING OXYGEN CONVERTER LINING LIFE TO MORE
THAN 7000 MELTS IN OAO ChMK

Information is provided concerning the reorganization of refractory structures in OAO Chelyabinsk Metallur
gical Combine. It is shown that as a result of the measures carried out technical and economic indices of the
operation of the main units of the OAO ChMK oxygen converter workshop have improved.

In August 2008 in OAO ChMK the refractory structure
was reorganized as a result of which formation of a new
sub-division appeared, i.e., refractory work management
(RWM). A brief layout is shown in Fig. 1 of the position of
the RWM in the overall structure of the plant. Components of
the sub-division formed were existing structures directly
concerned in refractory work of the combine: management
of the repair of metallurgical furnaces; a section of composite
materials of the research and technology center (RTC). The
structure of the RWM was formed as a sub-division of the di
rectorate for repair and technical provisions.
Thus, after creating the RWM within one structure re
fractory work was combined and centralized, connected both
with direct fulfilment of refractory work, and with technical
support, uniformity of technical documentation, monitoring
of the operation of a refractory lining, and also concerned
with questions of optimizing the design of lining metallurgi
cal units, introduction of monitoring of technical and eco
nomic parameters of the operation of refractory materials.
The structure of the RWM is shown in Fig. 2.
The main task of the RWM are:
1. An increase in the operating duration of a refractory
2. Minimization of the specific consumptions of refrac
tory materials in the cost of smelted metal.
3. An improvement in the production indices due to
shortening the downtime of production equipment in repair
of a refractory lining.
According to analysis of the distribution of expenditure
for refractory materials of metallurgical units in OAO ChMK
it is established that the main proportion of expenditure oc-
curs in steel pouring ladles. However, a significant par of ex-
penditure (second place in grading of separate expenditure
for refractory materials) is occupied by the main steel melt-
ing units, i.e. electric furnaces and oxygen converters. Apart
