Tokin, worked at the Biological Research Institute of the Leningrad State University, and got his PhD degree in 1969. In 1971, A.V. Zhirmunsky invited Kasyanov to the newly organized Institute of Marine Biology in Vladivostok, where Kasyanov worked for 34 years as a research worker, head of laboratory, dep- uty director, and, from 1989, director of the institute. Before coming to Vladivostok, Kasyanov worked in the field of experimental embryology on amphibians and fish. One of his works of that time was published in the journal Ontogenez in 1971 and was repeatedly cited by well known European and American scientists. At the Institute of Marine Biology, he was involved in projects related to the development and reproduction of marine invertebrates. He organized a laboratory of embryology and headed it for many years.
