Sukhodolets has been a founder and leader of the leading scientific school of bacterial genetics in Russia. This school has brought up many excellent scientists, specialists in bacterial genet- ics, who are currently successfully working in research. Many of his former students head molecular genetic studies in GosNIIGenetika and other genetic centers in and beyond Russia. Vitalii V. Sukhodolets has made a great contribution to the Russian and world genetics. His life in science was devoted to fundamental issues of the modern genetics: regulation of gene activity and mechanisms of genetic exchange. To elucidate the nature of recombi- nation, he has developed a unique model system, which has no analogs in the world—long tandem duplications of the Escherichia coli chromosome. He headed theo- retical and experimental studies that shed light on the origin and molecular nature of life and mechanisms of biological evolution.
