PERSONALIA Vitalii Anatol’evich Pukhalskiy: On His 70th Birthday Institute (Kiev oblast), where he worked as a researcher in wheat breeding and then headed the group of selec- tion of cereals. In 1960, he started postgraduate studies at the Department of Genetics, Breeding, and Seed Pro- duction of the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy and later defended his candidate’s dissertation entitled “Biology and Morphogenesis of New Forms of Winter Wheat.” He stayed at the department as an assistant professor, and later an associate professor, until 1980. At that time, Pukhalskiy’s interests focused on cytoge- netics and speciﬁc genetics of wheat. His studies con- cerned selective fertilization in wheat, cytogenetics of distant wheat hybrids, and lethality genes in the genus Triticum L. He for the ﬁrst time ever demonstrated the existence of true winter durum wheat, the system of gametophyte wheat genes determining selection during fertilization, genes suppressing complementary inter- action of hybrid necrosis genes, and the presence of inhibitor genes of powdery mildew resistance in the D genome of wheat.
