Obituary Valery Ivanovich Belyaev, Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, well-known scientist in the field of geophysics, modelling of complex marine systems, and recreative geog- raphy, passed away on March 28, 1999 in his 68th year of life. Valery Ivanovich Belyaev was born in Pushkin, Leningrad region. In 1954, he graduated from the Department of Physics at the Moscow State University. In 1959, he completed postgraduate courses at the Moscow State University. In 1959-1962, Belyaev worked at the Institute of Applied Geophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Obninsk, Kaluga region. In 1962, the Marine Hydrophysical Institute was moved from Moscow to Sevas- topoi and subordinated to the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Since that time, Belyaev worked at the Marine Hydrophysical Institute, where he worked his way from a senior researcher to the head of a department and a deputy director. He took an active part in the organization of the work of the Institute; he was also one of the first organizers of ecological and hydrophysical investigations in Sevastopol and in the Ukraine.
