Valentin Borisovich graduated from the Leningrad Technological Institute (LTI) in 1937 and then worked at the same institute. In 1941 31945, he served at the fronts of World War II, and then again returned to LTI. He defended his doctoral dissertation in 1952, was rector of the Leningrad Technological Institute in 196531975, and headed the Leningrad State Univer- sity (LGU) in 197531985. Aleskovskii is an outstanding scientist in the field of solid state chemistry and technology of inorganic materials and the author of more than 450 publica- tions, including 12 monographs and textbooks, and more than 150 inventions. Aleskovskii’s investiga- tions are mainly concerned with the nature and chem- ical transformations of solids, including those of high- ly organized substances. He created a new direction in the solid state chemistry: chemistry of highly orga- nized substances. than 25 doctors and 100 candidates of sciences are The part played by Aleskovskii in the foundation among his disciples. and development of solid state chemistry in our coun- For his scientific and pedagogic activities and par- try is tremendous.
