Vale Dr Baldev Raj (9 April 1947–6 January 2018)
It is with great sadness that the International Institute of
Welding (IIW) and the global welding community note the
passing of Dr. Baldev Raj early in 2018. Not only did Dr.
Raj achieve technical eminence during his career, but he was
also a leader of great warmth and understanding who inspired
a new generation of welding engineers and researchers.
Dr. Raj served on the Board of Directors of the IIW and as
President 2011–2014. With boundless energy and a thirst for
knowledge, he contributed actively to Technical and other IIW
Working Units, particularly in the areas of welding technology
and non-destructive evaluation of components.
His leadership of IIW during his term of office as President
was distinguished by his humility, natural goodness and sense
of equity - and above all by his joy of living and interacting
with people. His focus on education and encouragement of
young people’s participation in IIW, especially those from
developing nations, was founded on his belief that igniting
young minds was the best way to give back to society.
A man who believed destiny is an instrument of hard work,
values, dedication, ethics and noble intent, Dr. Raj guided the
Indian Institute of Welding’s achievement of IIW Authorised
National Body status, significantly lifting welding education
and certification in his country, with many welding profes-
sionals applying for IIW qualification and certification.
A Distinguished Scientist in the Department of Atomic
Energy, Government of India, and the Director of the Indira
Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Dr. Raj
championed the Indian Fast Reactor Programme which is
widely acclaimed nationally and internationally and has
achieved many important international benchmarks.
