Vale Dr Baldev Raj (9 April 1947–6 January 2018) Welding in the World (2018) 62:683–684 https://doi.org/10.1007/s40194-018-0603-9 OBITUARY It is with great sadness that the International Institute of Welding (IIW) and the global welding community note the passing of Dr. Baldev Raj early in 2018. Not only did Dr. Raj achieve technical eminence during his career, but he was also a leader of great warmth and understanding who inspired a new generation of welding engineers and researchers. Dr. Raj served on the Board of Directors of the IIW and as President 2011–2014. With boundless energy and a thirst for knowledge, he contributed actively to Technical and other IIW Working Units, particularly in the areas of welding technology and non-destructive evaluation of components. His leadership of IIW during his term of office as President was distinguished by his humility, natural goodness and sense of equity - and above all by his joy of living and interacting with people. His focus on education and encouragement of young people’s participation in IIW, especially those from developing nations, was founded on his belief that igniting young minds was the best way to give back to society.
