MARINE HYDROPHYSICAL INSTITUTE (founded in 1929; in the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences since 1961)* PRINCIPAL SCIENTIFIC RESULTS Physics of the Ocean The works of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute in the field of physics of the ocean represent a fundamental contribution to the development of contemporary geophysical hydrodynamics, theory of climate and, first of all, climate of the ocean, study of small-scale and large-scale hydrodynamical and hydrophysical processes in the ocean, including the processes of interaction between the ocean and atmosphere, surface and internal waves, optical, electromagnetic, and acoustic properties of ma- rine media, and the transfer of energy and various substances in the ocean. As a practical consequence of these works, one can mention the solution of vari- ous special engineering, hydrometeorological, and oceanographic problems con- nected with the economical development and use of the water areas and mineral and biological resources of the seas and oceans. 1960-1967 Development of the theory of equatorial subsurface countercurrents in the World Ocean (Lomonosov Current in the Atlantic, Cromwell Cur- rent in the Pacific, and Tareev Current in the
