JUBILEES “Here is Viktor Ivanov, the rocker of everything is its foundations...” From the wall newspaper of the 5th year students Biological Faculty of the Moscow state University, 1958 DOI: 10.1134/S1062360407050086 used his rich experience for development of histochem- ical methods for visualization of lead, cadmium, and nickel in living root tissues. Student days at the Department of Plant Physiology, Moscow State University (1954–1959) and beginning of experimental work under the guidance of Assistant Professor N. G. Potapov, former collaborator of D. A. Sabinin, laid down the foundations of his interest to the problems of plant growth, for which the root growth is the best model. In the root, both growth pro- cesses, division and elongation, are separated in space and time: division in the apical meristem and elonga- tion in the zone of elongation above the meristem, thus allowing observation and study of the transition of mer- istematic cells to elongation.
