On February 27, 2002. the Chief Scientist of the
Zoological Institute RAS, Doctor of Science, Prof.
Vladislav Vil’gel’movich Khlebovich turned 70.
Almost his entire scientific carrier has been connected
with studies in the Zoological Institute RAS.
After graduating from Leningrad State University
in 1954, he passed postgraduate courses in the Zoo-
logical Institute and then worked in the institute in the
position of junior scientist. In 1962, Khlebovich, at
the invitation of Prof. N.L. Gerbil’skii, organized the
Laboratory of Experimental Hydrobiology in Petergof
Biological Scientific Institute at Leningrad State Uni-
versity and there initiated in the institute regular stud-
ies on the water–salt metabolism of hydrobionts.
Since 1964 he has worked back in the Zoological
In his student years, Khlebovich showed great
interest in experimental studies; therefore, when he
was offered the position of the Director of White Sea
Biological Station at Leningrad State University, he
unhesitatingly accepted the offer and occupied this dif-
ficult and important position from 1965 to 1978.
Thanks to his energy and initiatives, the White Sea Sta-
tion turned into one of the best marine biological sta-
tions in Russia. There, at the White Sea, comprehen-
sive investigations were initiated on the adaptations of
hydrobionts to abiotic environmental factors, first of
all, to salinity.
In 1971 Khlebovich successively defended his Doc-
tor of Science Thesis entitled “The Concept of Critical
Salinity in Zoology.”
As the Director of a biological station, he focused
great attention on the development of classical hydrobi-
ological investigations. For example, the results of his
long-term observations at a decade station in Chupa
Bay of the White Sea are of great scientific significance
not only for the station and the institute. There are not
many marine stations in the world where, over almost
50 years, the oceanological and hydrobiological param-
eters have been monitored and registered at one and the
same point every 10 days.
While working at the Biological Station, Khlebov-
ich trained many talented scientists, who, in different
scientific centers of Russia and the former Soviet
republics, continue investigations into the ecological
physiology of water organisms. He always generously
shares his ideas and the plans of their realization with
his students and colleagues. The lectures of Khlebovich
at St. Petersburg State University always engage lots of
students, and many of these students work later on sub-
jects that he proposes. Khlebovich belongs to a group
of only a few scientists who created their own original
