Using variational algorithss, computations aiming at the reconstruction of the initial passive impurity field have been performed. The likely areas of impurity propagation from various sources in the Black Sea have been identified. The paper discusses different aspects of the application of variational methods of data assimilation in the course of modelling passive impurity propagation.
