A ternary zinc(II) complex containing a tripodal ligand tris(2-benzimidazylmethyl)amine (ntb) and a cinnamate with composition [Zn(ntb)(cinnamate)]NO3·DMF was synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the central zinc(II) atom is five-coordinated in a distorted trigonal-bipyramid geometry. The DNA-binding properties of the zinc(II) complex were investigated by spectrophotometric methods and viscosity measurements, and the results suggested that the zinc(II) complex bind to DNA via an intercalation binding mode. Additionally, zinc(II) complex exhibited potential scavenge hydroxyl radical properties in in vitro studies.
