A novel dinuclear Cu(II) complex, [Cu2L(phen)4]·L [H2L = 1,2-phenylenedioxydiacetic acid], was obtained by the self-assembly of 1,2-phenylenedioxydiacetic acid, phen and Cu(CH3COO)2·H2O in CH3OH/H2O (v:v = 1:1) solution containing MgCl2. The Cu(II) complex has been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. The crystal belongs to triclinic, space group P − 1 with a = 13.090(3) Å, b = 14.211(3) Å, c = 19.255(4) Å, α = 92.91(3)°, β = 91.29(3)°, γ = 110.01(3)°, V = 3,358.2(13) Å3, Z = 2, D c = 1.282 g cm−3, μ = 0.698 mm−1, F (000) = 1,332, and final R = 0.0744, ωR = 0.2109. In the crystal structure, each Cu(II) atom is five-coordinated in a distorted square pyramid coordination environment. The molecules form one-dimensional chain structure by π–π stack. The electrochemical properties of the Cu(II) complex have been investigated.
