Synthesis of Carboxymethyl Chitin Benzylidenehydrazides

Abstract—Carboxymethyl chitin benzylidenehydrazides were synthesized, and conditions of their analysis
were found. The effect of substituent in the benzene ring of the aldehyde on the number of benzylidene groups
introduced into the polymer was determined.
Polymeric hydrazides and hydrazones are of much
interest for the development of new and improvement of
existing drugs. The hydrazide and hydrazone groups are
structural fragments of many drugs such as Hydazepam,
Isoniazid, Ftivazid, nitrofurans, Nifuroxazide , and
immobilization of drugs on polymers reduces their
toxicity and affects their bioavailability and clearance
rate. Hydrazides and benzylidenehydrazides of
carboxymethyl dextran, carboxyethyl dextran, and alginic
acid were prepared previously [2–4]. Carboxymethyl
chitin hydrazide was prepared for the ﬁ rst time in , but
its reactions with carbonyl compounds were not reported.
In this study we examined the reaction of carboxy-
methyl chitin hydrazide with aromatic aldehydes.
Chemical modiﬁ cation of chitin followed the scheme
