The grayscale imaging of topographical defects in the inspection of highly polished surfaces by optical topography is studied theoretically. It is ascertained how image quality varies with imaging conditions and the characteristics of the light source. Recommendations are made concerning the use of optical topography in the inspection of wafer surfaces.
