Sorption Properties of AG-3 Activated Carbon
in Relation to Oil Products

Abstract—Adsorption of oil products from water on AG-3 activated carbon was studied. The adsorption
isotherm was constructed and the quantitative characteristics of the sorption process on carbon were determined.
Oil products are one of the main environmentally haz-
ardous toxicants. For this reason, their utilization is a top
urgent problem. Aqueous mixtures containing oil prod-
ucts are colloidal dispersions, which may be separated
onto phases by different methods. The reagent methods
consisting in treatment of emulsions with electrolytes are
the most widespread at mechanical engineering plants.
The drawbacks of these methods include the formation of
toxic wastes that require neutralization and of the result-
ing aqueous phase that requires further puriﬁ cation .
One of the promising methods of waste water treat-
ment in a wide range of concentrations and components is
treatment with different sorbents, including natural ones.
Applying adsorbents in each case requires study of their
characteristics, in particular the adsorption.
The study is aimed at determining the quantitative
characteristics of the adsorption of oil products on AG-3
The sorption properties of AG-3 activated carbon were
studied in static and dynamic modes. The decolorization
ability of carbon was determined under the static condi-
tions by methylene blue [GOST (State Standard) 4453-7].
The carbon (10-g weight) was placed into a 250-ml ﬂ ask
with the solution with ﬁ xed methylene blue concentration
in the range 10–75 mg l
. The mixture was stirred for 2 h
and the carbon was ﬁ ltered. The residual concentration of
the dye was determined photocolorimetrically.
The adsorption properties of activated carbon with
respect to oil products in the dynamic mode were studied
using the output extraction curves. To construct them,
the model emulsion of industrial oil in water was passed
through a 10-cm carbon layer at a linear velocity of
5 m h
. The oil products in the ﬁ ltrate were analyzed in
an AN-2 analyzer according to PND F (Federal Nature-
Management Normative Document) 14.1 : 2.5-95. The
results of the analyses were processed by the Microsoft
Excel software .
Adsorption Г is determined by excess substance at the
interface in comparison with its equilibrium amount in
solution. The properties of the sorbent are estimated from
comparison of the initial concentration of the substance
in solution with its residual concentration after solution
contact with carbon.
