Shrinkage phenomena in graphitization of preforms in castner furnaces Dilatometric measurements of heated electrode preforms have been performed in industrial Castner furnaces for graphitization. The obtained curves reflect the processes typical for graphitization. In order to discuss the processes, the entire temperature range is divided into four parts, namely, 20 – 1000, 1000 – 1300, 1300 – 2100, and 2100 – 3100‡C. The behavior of the electrode preforms is analyzed in each of the temperature ranges, and recommendations are given for correcting the regimes of power supply. It is shown that the kind of filler coke and the impregnation of the preforms with pitch affect the dilatometric curve of the electrode plug considerably.
