SELECTING GUNNING MATERIALS FOR THE WORKING LINING
OF INTERMEDIATE LADLES AT THE MMK CORPORATION

Production has been organized of new grades of gunning materials at the Magnesite Gunning Material Corpo
ration (previously the Magnesite Intokast Satka Corporation), which is part of the Magnesite Group holding,
and these materials are used to form the working layer of lining in intermediate MNLZ ladles. Effective use
has been made of a novel special technology for preparing the gunning materials. The method implies organiz
ing the relation between the refractory maker and the users as regards modifying the quality of the gunning
materials in accordance with changes in the production parameters and the amount of steel. The new materials
completely match the technological specifications of MNLZ Corporation at MMK and provide a considerable
reduction in the costs of preparing the intermediate ladles.

At many metallurgical firms there has been upgrading of
the technology for continuous steel casting. The working
layer of lining in the intermediate ladles is made from gun-
ning materials of basic composition. A wide range of these
materials is used for the working layer in the MNLZ interme-
diate ladles of various types, which are produced by the
Magnesite Group Corporation and supplied to metallurgical
firms in Russia and other CIS countries. The materials are
produced at the Magnesite Gunning Materials Corporation,
which is part of the Magnesite Group holding (previously the
Magnesite Intokast Satka Corporation). That firm was
brought into use at the end of 2005 fitted with computerized
lines designed and made by leading European firms special
izing in the production of equipment for making unmolded
Specifications are tightening for the refractory lining on
account of the growing demands for metal quality and the in
tensification of metallurgical processes. The lining stability
at the various firms differs because of the differing working
conditions, and this makes it necessary to seek out new ap
proaches to the development and application of gunning ma
terials for intermediate ladles. That approach is a developed
method of selecting the composition for the gunning materi-
als in accordance with the given technological parameters for
the user MNLZ. The method implies organizing connections
between the maker and consumer as regards modifying the
quality of the material in accordance with changes in the
technological parameters in the production and the quality of
the steel at the user’s plant.
First stage: one examines the technological parameters
of the MNLZ and draws up a list of specifications for the
quality of the lining working layer in the intermediate ladle,
and then revises the facilities of the equipment used for mak
ing the lining, and this defines the properties of the gunning
material that guarantee the attainment of a given quality and
safe operation from the deposition of the lining to the re
moval of it after use.
Second stage: components of the gunning material are
– periclase powders with appropriate grain-size compo
– various combinations of fibrous materials designed to
improve the adhesion of the gunning material, the drying of
the deposited layer, and the reduction of the tendency to
sinter during use;
– a bonding material to produce the best strength in the
gunning material; and
