In its own words, the RIO has encouraged work on “public policies such as antitrust, regulation, deregulation, public enterprise, and privatization.” Each of the first three General Editors of the Review—Stanley Boyle, Stephen Cox, and Geoff Shepherd— made their marks both as researchers and policymakers, and each also made sure that the RIO would be an outlet for the good, current, and important work in these fields. In 2002 I had the privilege of becoming General Editor of the RIO, and sought to further enhance the role of the journal in these areas. I consulted with several mem- bers of the Editorial Board and other individuals for ideas as to how this might be accomplished. Out of those discussions was born the idea of an annual “Antitrust and Regulatory Update”. The Review of Industrial Organization Springer Journals
