HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY Professor Nikolai Nikolaevich Lyubavin (To 160th Anniversary of His Birthday) Nikolai Nikolaevich Lyubavin, a graduate from St. Petersburg University and a pupil of N.N. Sokolov (1826 1877) and D.I. Mendeleev (1834 1907), is primarily known as the author of the book Fiziches- kaya khimiya (Physical Chemistry) (first issue 1876, second issue 1877) and of a seven-volume textbook of technical chemistry. Lyubavin was born on April 10 (22), 1845, into a wealthy merchant’s family in St. Petersburg. He received his secondary education at St. Petersburg College of commerce. In 1867, he graduated from the natural department of the physicomathematical faculty of St. Petersburg University with a Ph. D. Beginning in early 1868, Lyubavin worked on his own initiative at a number of German chemical labo- ratories of the following scientists: H. Kolbe (1818 1884) in Leipzig, A. Baeyer (1835 1917, Nobel Prize in 1905) in Berlin, R. Bunsen (1811 1899) A.
