HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY Professor Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Krakau (to 150th Anniversary of His Birthday) A.A. Krakau, professor of chemistry at Emperor Alexander III Electrotechnical Institute in St. Peters- burg, occupies an honorable place in the history of domestic chemistry owing not only to his studies in the field of organic chemistry, but also to the fact that he was the first who started to deliver a special course of electrochemistry and organized training of electro- chemical engineers. Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Krakau was born on July 30 (August 11), 1855, in St. Petersberg in a rather well-cultured family. His father Aleksandr Ivanovich Krakau was a known architect, and his mother, Anna Vasil’evna (nee Grigorovich) was of artistic origin [1]. Having finished Mai Gymnasium, one of the best in St. Petersburg [2], Krakau entered the natural department of the physicomathematical faculty of St. Petersburg State University in 1873.
