PRODUCTION AND USE OF VIBROCAST PRODUCTS

An assortment of products made by the young company “Promresurs” for casting steel is presented. It is noted
that the products are made with high-quality raw materials, modern technologies, and high-quality equipment.
Results are presented from tests of the products at the Nizhniy Tagil Metallurgical Combine.

The higher operating speeds of the latest generation of
steelmaking equipment and the increasingly stringent re-
quirements on the reliability of manufacturing systems in
general have created a demand for new high-quality materi-
als and semifinished products for use in steel production. In
particular, a strong demand has developed for such products
as cored wire used to introduce alloying additions and
inoculants into steel during its treatment outside the furnace,
highly durable linings for steel-pouring ladles, tundishes, and
ladle-bottom injection systems, ultra- and low-cement con-
cretes, and multi-heat ceramics for cassette-type slide gates.
An analysis of the markets for these materials and products
shows that Russian technologies lag significantly behind
their counterparts abroad and that there is a wide range of
imported products for which there are no acceptable Rus-
To fill the need for advanced materials that can take the
place of imports, a modern company by the name of “Prom-
resurs” has been created in Nizhniy Tagil. The company
makes a new generation of cored wire and refractories for the
casting and out-of-furnace treatment of steel.
The first cored-wire production shop at Promresurs be-
gan operation in 2007. In just four years, the plant has be-
come one of the leading producers of cored wire in Russia. It
also holds more than 20 patents for manufacturing technolo-
gies and cored-wire fillers.
To make shaped refractories, in 2010 the company intro-
duced a line that produces vibrocast products for slide gates,
injection systems that are installed in the bottom of
steel-pouring ladles, and shaped products for tundishes. By
significantly shortening the turnaround for tundishes, use of
the new generation of slide-gate refractories is improving la-
dle logistics, lowering costs, and - in conjunction with the
use of long-lasting slit-type bottom injection systems - im-
proving the quality of the cast steel. Refractories for the in-
jection systems are made using high-quality components
produced in EC countries (components for which there are as
yet no suitable Russian-made replacements) and the best ma-
terials made by Russian manufacturers. The use of vibro-
casting to obtain products made of thixotropic low-cement
corundum-based and corundum-spinel-based refractories is
making it possible to adapt factory operations to the produc-
tion of new products (including those ordered in small
batches) in 1 – 2 months regardless of the products’ weight
By using high-quality raw materials and a progressive
manufacturing technology and carefully choosing the com-
position and production regimes of refractory concretes to
reflect the customer’s requirements, the company can obtain
the highest possible indices based on price and quality. Mod
ern technologies have been acquired from the world’s lead
ing manufacturers together with highly efficient production
