Preface

Preface Positivity (2017) 21:517–518 DOI 10.1007/s11117-017-0495-8 Positivity © Springer International Publishing 2017 The fields of Banach algebras and Positivity have developed largely independently of each other. Still, there are many instances where these two disciplines in Functional Analysis meet in the common object of an ordered Banach algebra, often an algebra of operators on an ordered Banach space. One could even argue that such ordered Banach algebras of operators occur at least as naturally in mathematics and its applications as the much better studied algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. The notion of ‘positivity’ is a quite common one in the sciences! Yet a systematic study of such algebras of operators, and of ordered Banach algebras in general, is essentially in its infancy. In order to remedy this deficit, a workshop with the title Ordered Banach Algebras was organised at the Lorentz Center in Leiden by Garth Dales (Lancaster, UK), Marcel de Jeu (Leiden, The Netherlands), Sonja Mouton (Stellenbosch, South Africa), Ben de Pagter (Delft, The Netherlands) and Tony Wickstead (Belfast, UK). The workshop took place in the week of 21–25 July 2014 and was generously supported by the Lorentz Center as well as (in alphabetical order) the Delft http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Positivity Springer Journals
