The conference on Variational Analysis and Optimization was held between May 18
and 22, 2015 in Limoges (France). It was dedicated to Professor R. Tyrrell Rockafellar
on the occasion of his 80th birthday, to honor his exceptional contributions in mathe-
matics and in particular to the genaral area covered by the title of the conference and
beyond. Information about the conference can be found at http://terryfest2015.xlim.
This special issue of Mathematical Programming Series B contains papers based
but not limited to presentations at the conference.
After the conference an open call was made for papers in the general area of
Variational Analysis and Optimization which found enthusiastic response from the
community. It was not surprising that most of the papers received were in many
ways related to the fundamental contributions of Professor R.T. Rockafellar to the
area, in particular to nonsmooth analysis, functional analysis, nonlinear program-
ming, mathematical economics, risk theory, quantitative finance, numerical methods
for optimization and optimal control. A careful attention was paid to the balance
between theoretical, numerical and applied contributions. The submissions were ref-
ereed in the same way as regular papers submitted to Mathematical Programing A.
