This issue is special in that all these considerations are inseparable from the name and research work of Aca- demician Georgii Pavlovich Georgiev, one of the founders of molecular biology and molecular genetics in Russia and worldwide, whose 70th birthday is cele- brated on February 4, 2003, by the scientific community. The triumphant of Georgiev in science is remarkable for the extremely wide area of his scientific interests and his impressive achievements in several fields of the molecular biology and molecular genetics of eukaryotes. Georgiev made a number of discoveries that became classic and gave rise to separate branches of science. These are the nuclear scaffold (nuclear matrix), replicon organization of chromo- somal domains, nuclear precursors of messenger RNA (pre-mRNA), palindrome sequences of pre-mRNA and DNA, nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles containing pre- mRNA, a new principle of the organization of nucleopro- tein structures, transposable elements of animal genomes, and genes of metastasizing and anticancer protection. These achievements have been highly regarded by the scientific community. Georgiev is a member of European Academy of Sciences, the German Academy of Leopoldina, the Norwegian Academy of Sciences, and the Spanish Academy of Sciences. He is also an associate member of EMBO and a laureate of the Lenin Prize and State Prizes of the Soviet Union and Russia.
