Res Chem Intermed (2014) 40:2155 DOI 10.1007/s11164-014-1592-y • • Bo-Cheng Wang Jyh-Shing Lin San-Lang Wang Published online: 29 March 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014 The first OPU–TKU International Symposium on Frontier Chemistry and Materials for the 21st Century was held in Sakai, Osaka, Japan, 18–19 November, 2013. Because of the high quality of the papers presented at the symposium, the organizing committee proposed publication of the papers in a special issue Research on Chemical Intermediates. In July 2012, Tamkang University (TKU) and Osaka Prefecture University (OPU) signed a sister university agreement to develop academic cooperation and exchange scholars between the universities. Last year, when Professor Masakazu Anpo visited TKU; we decided the date, place, and topics for this ‘‘OPU–TKU International Symposium’’. Development of new materials has recently become an extremely interesting research topic, especially in chemistry. Organic synthesis and theoretical investigation based on calculation are both important in the field. Thus, we decided ‘‘Frontier Chemistry and Materials for the 21st Century’’ as the main topic of the symposium. The 22 papers included in this special issue give an idea of advances of our knowledge and capabilities in this research field. We would like to thank all the authors for presenting their recent research contribution for this special issue. We also express our sincere gratitude to all the reviewers for their effort and expertise in reviewing the manuscripts. B.-C.
