For this session, several speakers were in vited from the USA, S outh K orea an d J apan. T his special issue of Research on Ch emical Inter mediates commemorates the excellent and imp ortant contributions pres ented at this session. Zeolites have b een k nown as ‘hy drated al umino-silicate minerals’ si nce 1756; however, res earch activities into this eld only began w hen M obil introduced organic cat ions into zeo lite synthesis in the 1960s, an d MF I-type zeo lites were discovered in the 1970s. T hen, i n the 1980s, alum ino-phosphate mo lecular sieves and ti tano-silicate molecular sieves were dis covered by U nion Carb ide an d Eniricerche, resp ectively.
