Also a vailable onl ine - www.vsppub.com The very rst Japan/ Korea Sy mposium on Cat alysis of t he 21st Century w as held in Sakai City at Osaka P refecture University in May, 20 01. It was a great honor an d pleasure to host this eighth s ymposium betw een Japan and Korea h ere si nce Sakai, as one o f t he rst port cit ies of Jap an, has long had very close ties to Korea fro m ancient times. The J apanese are greatly indebted t o Korea fo r t he long his tory of t rade and cultural exchanges t hat ourished, es pecially in Sak ai. T hanks t o t he import of green t ea here, t he most famous tea master in Japanese history, Sen -no-Rikyu, is from Sak ai City. It was, t herefore, ver y mean ingful t hat this most recent symposium w as held here, n ot o nly p romoting greater and cl oser friendships and ties between o ur two cou ntries, but als o greater interest and de velopments in the catalytic sciences for th is new cen tury. In r ecent years, ne w, en vironmentally fr iendly cat alytic and p hotocatalytic tech- nologies ha ve been ackn owledged t o b e o ne o f the most vital areas of sci enti c research, that is, catalysis for the recovery an d p rotection of a clean and safe global environment. T he parti cipants in this symposium fro m academ ia and i ndustry w ere able to address and d iscuss the most advanced app roaches and d evelopments fo r practical and ef cient catalytic systems and p rocesses. Here, in this special issue of Research o n C hemical Inter mediates , i s a collection of the highlight con tributions t o this symposium. W e would l ike to thank t he contributors as well as every p articipant to this symposium, each o f w hom m ade this a successful, instructive, and mem orable e vent.
