Modification, Sorption, and Desorption of Aminoglycosides

Abstract-Methods of modification of polymer hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with the aim
to improve their hydrophilic characteristics are described. The absorption of antibiotics such as amino-
glycosides and the kinetics of their liberation from modified hydrogels are studied.
Polymer hydrogels are widely used as drug carriers.
Binding of drug with a hydrogel provides not only its
immobilization but also its controlled removal in
prolonged use. It is important that binding of a drug
with a hydrogel in some cases decreases the toxicity
of the drug. For example, this was established for
Gentamicin bonded with N-vinylpyrrolidone copoly-
mer . Soft contact lenses impregnated with drugs
and used for treatment of ocular diseases are typical
examples of medical hydrogels.
In this study we examined the absorption and
liberation of such antibiotics as aminoglycosides with
polymer hydrogels based on 2-hydroxyethyl meth-
acrylate and used in production of soft contact lenses.
As antibiotics we used aminoglycosides

Aminoglyocsides were purchased from the Sintez Joint-Stock
Company (Kurgan, Russian Federation).

Aminoglycosides are commercially available in
the form of sulfates. We also used them in the base
form. The bases were synthesized by passing aqueous
solutions of sulfates through a column packed with
an anion-exchange resin. This process can be pres-
