The three-dimensional near-wake structures behind a sinusoidal cylinder have been investigated using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement technique at Re=3,000. The mean velocity fields and spatial distributions of ensemble-averaged turbulence statistics for flows around the sinusoidal and corresponding smooth cylinders were compared. The near-wake behind the sinusoidal cylinder exhibited pronounced spanwise periodic variations in the flow structure. Well-organized streamwise vortices with alternating positive and negative vorticity were observed along the span of the sinusoidal cylinder. They suppress the formation of the large-scale spanwise vortices and decrease the overall turbulent kinetic energy in the near-wake of the sinusoidal cylinder. The sinusoidal surface geometry significantly modifies the near-wake structure and strongly controls the three-dimensional vortices formed in the near-wake.
