After a 6-year fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, he became a professor of surgery at Université Laval of Québec city in 1966 and served his entire career, later as chief of the department of general surgery, at Laval Hospital until his retirement in 2006. Professor Marceau was always involved in the training of medical students and residents in surgery within his position at the Université Laval. In 2008, he was appointed professor emeritus at Laval Université and in 2011, he was nominated for the BOutstanding Achievement Award^ in the field of Metabolic and Bariatric surgery at the Annual meeting of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). One of the most remarkable accomplishments of his career was the establishment of an effective follow-up program of bariatric surgery with a patient retention rate of more than 90% in a setting where patients frequently lived far away from the surgical center.
