OOO GRUPPA MAGNEZIT IN LINING STEEL-POURING LADLES

The activity of OOO Gruppa Magnezit is described, concerning production of oxide-carbon refractories, and
methods of preparing refractory linings from them for steel-pouring ladles with the aim of obtaining the mini
mum specific consumption of refractory materials and achieving a prescribed life.

The development of ferrous metallurgy in Russia and the
Ukraine is presented in Table 1. Towards 2015 there will be a
noticeable growth in steel production, and the proportion of
electric steel will increase significantly. Here open-hearth
production is almost reduced to zero. In this connection there
is an increase in the demand for oxide-carbon refractories for
lining steel-pouring ladles. A prediction is shown in Fig. 1,
from which it may be seen that the demand for oxide-carbon
refractories will increase and the greatest volume comprise
refractories for steel-pouring ladles.
It is well known that in contemporary metallurgy a
steel-pouring ladle plays a key role in steel production,
which is connected with the development of extra-furnace
steel treatment. Currently the following production opera
tions are performed in a steel-pouring ladle for treating mol
ten metal: vacuum-oxygen refining (VOR), argon-oxygen
decarburizing (AOD), vacuum-arc degassing (VAD), vac
uum-arc remelting (VAR), electroslag remelting (ESR), re
fining in a ladle furnace unit (ASEA-SKF), batch and circu
lation evacuation (DH & RH). In this connection there is a
considerable increase in demand for materials used for lin
ing. According to our estimate, expenditure on refractories
used in lining steel-pouring ladles is 40 – 50% of the expen
diture for refractories of basic composition of the whole steel
Currently OOO Gruppa Magnezit is a large producer of
oxide-carbon refractories, and the production areas of the
group are located in Russia, China, Slovakia and Germany.
Apart from production, the group is rapidly developing the
area of servicing on the basis of OOO Magnezit Motazh
Servis. Production of oxide-carbon refractories is mainly
concentrated in two enterprises in China (SP Yingko
Dalmond Refractories and SP Liaoning Dalmond Refrac-
tories Co), within Russia (AOA Kombinat Magnezit) and in
