The present research confirms the viewpoint that in Peter the Great Bay there are two distinct species of the genus Hypomesus: H. nipponensis(Japanese smelt), which was previously identified as H. olidus(pond smelt), and H. japonicus(sea smelt), which was considered to be a synonym of H. pretiosus(surf smelt). Detailed morphological descriptions of smelts from Peter the Great Bay and an identification key for all three species of Hypomesusof the Far Eastern seas of Russia are given.
