On the 90th birthday of Arkady Georgievich Kolesnikov* December 1997 marked the 90th birthday of Atkady Georgievich Kolesnikov, a fam- ous marine scientist, Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and Director of the Marine Hydrophysical Institute since its foundation in Scvastopol. In 1930, A. G. Kolesnikov graduated from the Bauman High Technical College in Moscow. In 1930-1938, hc worked at the All-Union Institute of Heat Engineering. In 1937, hc finished the postgraduate courses at the Department of Physics of the Moscow State University and defended his Candidate-Degree thesis. Since 1938, A. G. Kolcsnikov worked at the Department of Marine Physics of the Institute for Theoretical Geophysics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1942, the department was reorganized into the Marine Hydrophysical Laboratory of the Aca- demy of Sciences of the USSR and, in 1948, into the Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. At that time, it was located in the town of Lyublino near Moscow.
