Together with Timofeev-Ressovsky he carried out research in bio- technology and studied the binding by living organisms of various radioisotopes that enter natural communities be means of industrial waste or as a result of accidents at nuclear power sites. Based on these studies, effective measures were proposed for purification of the environ- ment from radioactive contamination. Ivanov was one of the first (together with Timofeev- Ressovsky) to begin studies of the genetics of Arabi- dopsis, one of the most extensively studied (in the genetic aspect) plants. While analyzing radiation- induced mutation, he demonstrated the important role of genetic mechanisms in the development of basic damage of irradiated organisms. Ivanov made a great contribution to developmental genetics. He formulated and confirmed the hypothesis concerning the ambiguous character of the relationship between cell cloning during embryogenesis, and the differentiation and mechanisms allowing embryonic cells to determine their position in a system of deter- mined coordinates.
