Dubinin’s first independent study (carried out in the laboratory headed by Serebrovsky) was the most advanced, in both theoretical and methodological terms, for that time. Like G. Mendel, who deduced fun- damental laws of heredity from the behavior of mor- phological characters in successive generations, Dubi- nin, in 1928, developed the central theory of gene, which was dozens of years ahead of its time, and laid the foundation of the complementation method. Dubinin’s statements at the conference of geneti- cists and breeders in Odessa in 1932 and the seminar at the Institute of Experimental Biology headed by Kol’tsov clearly showed the biological community that a young leader had appeared in Soviet genetics. Kol’tsov also understood this and suggested that Dubi- nin should head—actually, create anew—the Depart- ment of Genetics of the Institute of Experimental Biol- ogy. Dubinin was then only 25 years old. Kol’tsov wrote to the http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Russian Journal of Genetics Springer Journals
