It was an exciting time for combining phage genetics and RNA analyses to tease out these genetic programs. Peter learned the technique of physically separating the two strands of viral DNA to hybridize to messenger RNA preparations as one element of this analysis. Peter then went to Paris in 1966 to post-doc in Franc ¸ois Gros’ laboratory at the Institut de Biologie Physico-chimique (IBPC), where he used his expertise in DNA strand separation and isolation to study Peter Sheldrick was a prominent figure in the study of the program of RNA synthesis in bacteriophage lambda. In 1971, Peter shifted his focus to herpes simplex virus herpesviruses, having made a fundamental discovery in the early 1970s that opened the field to molecular analyses of (HSV), and subsequently moved to the Institut Pasteur in this important virus family.
