The motion of an intensive cyclonic eddy on a β-plane in the presence of a zonal non-uniform flow is studied numerically in the, framework of an equivalent-barotropic quasi-geostrophic model. The main aspects influencing the cyclone motion, namely, the velocity of the surrounding flow and the gradient of potential vorticity gradient, are analysed. The main types of trajectories of tropical cyclones are thence simulated.
