OBITUARIES (1925 2005) Nikolai Andreevich Kaluzhskii, one of the most prominent organizers of the domestic aluminum in- dustry, honored science worker, doctor of technical science, and professor, died of a severe illness on January 9, 2005, at the age of 79. He had headed for many years the All-Union Research and Design Insti- tute of Aluminum, Magnesium, and Electrode In- dustries (VAMI). Kaluzhskii was born on November 15, 1925, at Smorodino village (Kursk oblast) into an office workers’ family. He started to work in the war years at the age of sixteen. From January 1943 till March 1944 he served in the Soviet Army and took part in action. After being severely wounded, he was de- mobilized and continued his education. In 1951, Kaluzhskii graduated with a first-class honors degree from Leningrad Polytechnic Institute as an engineer-metallurgist.
