Modeling and simulation of light guide boards
for a photocatalytic deodorizing system

Abstract—In this investigation, we have carried out the modeling of light guide boards that were
able to operate effectively as a photocatalysts. Two different types of guide boards were developed:
one made of a UV-transparent acrylic board with V-shaped grooves on both sides, and the other made
of a similar acrylic board with a dot pattern silkscreen-printed on one side. Light beam simulations
were conducted on these boards and prototypes were designed and constructed based on the modeling.
Our studies have shown both these prototypes to be effective for use as a photocatalytic deodorizing

Photocatalysis is one of the most important environmental technologies today and
a great deal of attention has been focused on developing effective processes and
systems using safe energy sources that will protect our environment [1 –3]. New
products able to make use of light energy are, therefore, very much desired and it
is not surprising that many such systems are, in fact, already entering the market
for various applications. In this paper, we have reported on the modeling of two
different types of light guide boards analyzed by light beam simulation experiments
to construct an environmentally beneﬁcial system which operates photocatalytically.
We have also discussed and evaluated the effectiveness and efﬁciency of the
prototypes of these light boards for such photocatalytic reactions.
