Mitigation of microbially influenced corrosion of Cu–Ni (90/10) alloy in a seawater environment In industries where a heat exchanger is made up of Cu–Ni (90/10) alloy and seawater is used as a coolant, microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) is a serious problem. MIC of Cu–Ni (90/10) alloy in a seawater environment inoculated with sulfate-reducing bacteria was successfully inhibited by using two different inhibitor formulations viz. (1) 1,2,3-benzotriazole (BTAH) + tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate (THPS) and (2) 5-(3-aminophenyl)tetrazole + THPS. Electrochemical impedance and potentiodynamic polarization studies showed an inhibition efficiency greater than 99 % for both formulations. The inhibitor formulation BTAH + THPS is so effective that in its presence, there is total absence of any MIC and microfouling even after 90 days, as evidenced by scanning electron micrographs and microbial count.
