In his popular-science book In the Depths of Five Oceans, Mikhail Vladimirovich attempted to realize his place in science and the place of science in his life, and showed through the adventures of his life the inherent logic of various stages of underwater research and the severe constraints of development on the personality of the explorer. This book he devoted "To all those who dived. To all those who did not make it out of the water. To all those who waited" These books and the of hundreds scientific papers written by Propp have helped to guide our lives and those of our children, and have helped us to learn the pleasure of creativity. I hope that they will also open the severe but beautiful underwater world to our grandchil- dren. The scientific community has shown its apprecia- tion of the merits of Propp and his influence on the development of domestic and world science by honor- ing him with the rank of Deserved Scholar of Science of the Russian Federation. Those who wish to be acquainted with the biogra- phy of Mikhail Vladimirovich and to learn more about the history of underwater research in Russia are advised to read the paper "M.V. Propp, Forty Years of Underwa- ter Research" published in the Bulletin of the Far East Division of Russian Academy of Science, 2000, no. 2. M.V. Propp (the 1980s). I.I.
