As a child Michael was already fascinated by sci- ence and experimented with toy physics and chemistry sets in a closet in the family’s Paris apartment. He attended the University of Paris and earned a degree in sciences in 1942. During World War II, Michel Ter- Pogossian fought in the French Resistance against the occupying Germans. After the war, he continued to study sciences at the Institute of Radium in Paris. In 1946, he was given the choice to either complete his studies in England or in the United States. He chose Washington University in St. Louis, MO because it seemed ‘‘more exciting’’ since Nobel laureate Arthur Compton was the head of the Physics Department.
