A common path-shearing interferometer was adapted, using a Wollaston prism, to measure the diffusion coefficient for mass transfer of transparent, miscible liquids. The mathematics was developed for the time-dependent, one-dimensional diffusion process in a test cell when the diffusivity is a function of the local concentration of the fluids, and a procedure was devised to determine the diffusivity from the measured concentration gradient profiles. The results show that for diffusion in a water/glycerine system, the diffusivity depends on the concentration in an almost linear fashion.
