Professor Luigi Donati passed away in February 2003
after a short illness.
He was a full Professor of Plastic Surgery at Milan
Medical School from 1986 onward. He was an accom-
plished clinical surgeon, whose practice included the
Burns Centre in Milan, the largest in Italy.
Everyone who had the opportunity to meet and know
Prof. Donati was impressed by his energy and his sharp
mind. His research on skin substitutes and tissue banking
remain of fundamental importance, not only for his Italian
colleagues, but also for burns treatment and advances in
In the last years of his professional life Prof. Donati
created and directed a centre for research in biomaterials,
tissue engineering, computer graphics (eidomatica) and
medical robotics. Luigi Donati was President of the
European Burns Association (1995–1997), governing a
period of consolidation in that association’s history. His
flair was especially evident in his unforgettable speech at
the opening ceremony of the EBA congress in Leuven.
The Benedetto Marcello sonata for flute and cello led
him on his last journey.
The European Burns Association expresses deep sor-
row at his passing to his sweet wife Lucia and their
children Vera, Tommaso and Giacomo.
