Los Alamos National Laboratory Uncertainty Workshop: An Interval Perspective (2006) Reliable Computing 12: 65–71 DOI: 10.1007/s11155-006-2969-4  c Springer 2006 Los Alamos National Laboratory Uncertainty Workshop: An Interval Perspective On June 6–7, 2005, the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) sponsored a workshop on uncertainty. We summarize here out thoughts on a subset of the material presented, which we feel is of interest to this journal’s readership. Main topics. Themain emphasis of this workshop was on the real-life issues related to system reliability: • modeling uncertainty and propagation of uncertainty in a known model y = ƒ(x ,…, x ): based on the uncertainty of x ,describe the uncertainty in y; 1 n i • interpretation of uncertainty, and uncertainty trends, from a specific data source; • making decisions under various kinds of uncertainty. The invited workshop speakers were (in alphabetic order): Jane Booker (South- west Research Institute), Arthur Dempster (Harvard University), Scott Ferson (Applied Biomathematics), Jon Helton (Sandia National Laboratory), George Klir (State University of New York at Binghamton), Vladik Kreinovich (University of Texas at El Paso), Teddy Seidenfeld (Carnegie Mellon University), Nozer Singpur- walla (George Washington University), and Lotfi A. Zadeh (University of California at Berkeley). Agenda.
