His philosophy has shaped a few generations, and he has been a central figure in some crucial movements. However, partially due to the declining interest in aesthetics in contemporary China, there have not been many good books on Zhu’s life and philosophy. So I am grateful to see Li’s book, which provides a reflective account of Zhu’s life and a thoughtful analysis of Zhu’s philosophical development. Li’s book is divided into ten chapters, with the first nine chapters tracing Zhu’s life from his birth in 1897 to his death in 1986. The book does more than give a lively historical narrative of Zhu’s life and career. What makes the book special is that it goes deeper inside Zhu’s mind to reveal what kind of life he chose to live, and provides a systematic account of his philosophical developments. Many of these discussions are interesting and http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Dao Springer Journals
