Nu- merous researchers have used the IRI incorrectly and outside the manner the test creator has intended. Not only are the researchers’ results invalid, but unknowl- edgeable readers are being misled. Please ﬁnd attached a list of research that has employed the IRI erroneously. I further encourage the journal to educate readers as to the correct use of the IRI, as it is a potentially very useful instrument that individually assesses the dimensions of empathy. To clarify, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index is a multidimensional scale, composed of 28 self-report items, which assess four dimensions of dispositional empathy (Davis, 1980). There are seven items to assess each of four dimen- sions, referred to as subscales, of empathy: Perspective Taking (PT), Fantasy (FS), Empathic Concern (EC), and Personal Distress (PD).
