The paper briefly surveys the contributions made by mathematicians to the cause of liberty. In particular, we describe the figure of Éamon de Valera, mathematician, teacher, revolutionary and politician, who traversed the history of Ireland in the twentieth century, from the 1916 Easter Rising to the 1960s, becoming one of the most prominent and long-serving political figures in the international landscape.
