Sasikumar Published online: 7 August 2017 Indian Society of Labour Economics 2017 International migration and associated remittance flows have profoundly impacted the social and economic development in Kerala, in South India, particularly in the last four decades. The Research Unit on International Migration at the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, has been at the forefront in undertaking studies and surveys to delineate the impacts and implications of migration and remittance flows in Kerala’s development. One of the most noteworthy contribu- tions of this unit has been the Kerala Monitoring Studies carried out since 1998. The first survey under this series, called the Kerala Migration Survey, was conducted in 1998. The second, in 2003, was referred to as the South Asia Migration Study, as it attempted to compare and contrast Kerala’s situation with that of Sri Lanka, another major labour-sending country of South Asia. The third, focusing again on Kerala, was undertaken in 2007.
